With ever-increasing competition, an unknown author can easily get lost in the shuffle. Promoting your work effectively is crucial, but many authors have limited resources. The good news is, there are plenty of free and low-cost ways to spread the word about you and your writing. Here are some of my top tips:
Leverage Social Media
Social platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are goldmines for authors. Don’t just create accounts – engage regularly with users. Share snippets, ask questions, run polls and contests. Be sure to include relevant hashtags and links back to your website/Amazon page. Aim to build a loyal following organically. Once you have a decent number of engaged followers, you can reach out to them whenever you have a new release or major news.
Start a Blog
A blog on your website allows you to showcase your voice, perspective and expertise. Post regularly, not just about your books but about trends in your genre, writing tips, etc. Optimizing your content with keywords can help it get found by search engines. Link back to your books naturally within posts. Add social sharing buttons so readers can easily promote your pages.
Guest Post
Approach other blogs/websites in your niche and offer to contribute a guest post. This exposes you to new, targeted audiences already interested in your topic. Just be sure to only provide top-notch content – not a sales pitch. Include a short bio with links to your website/books at the end. Getting featured on multiple reputable sites will grow your authority over time.
Build an Email List
An email subscriber list allows you to reach your most engaged readers directly whenever you have news to share. Offer an opt-in incentive like a free short story or insider tips. Include sign-up forms on your website, social accounts and anywhere else you can. MailChimp and ConvertKit are two popular free email service providers. Avoid spamming subscribers – send quality content on a regular schedule.
Run Free Promotions
Consider running free promotions like giveaways and contests on sites like Goodreads and LibraryThing. Offer advance reader copies in exchange for honest reviews. The key is making sure the terms require sharing on social media and/or email lists. This expands your reach exponentially. Just don’t make participation too complicated – you want maximum sign-ups.
Network Locally
Look for opportunities to connect with readers face-to-face. Local bookstores, libraries and community centres often host free author events. Get to know event organizers and ask how to get involved. Even a reading for a small group exposes you to new people and gives you content to share online after.
Do Media Outreach
Identify media outlets like podcasts, radio shows, newspapers and magazines that could have an interest in interviewing you and/or reviewing your book. Reach out and pitch yourself, offering to send a copy for them to review if relevant. Securing earned media placements both grows awareness and lends you credibility.
Partner With Other Authors
Connect with authors who write for a similar audience. Exchange promotions of each others’ work on social media, newsletters, blogs etc. You can also bundle your book together with complementary titles and take turns promoting the set to each others’ fans. Having the support of respected colleagues goes a long way.
Submit to Aggregators
Increase your discoverability by getting your book information listed on major book/author databases like Goodreads. Amazon Author Central, Books2Read, etc. Claiming and completing your author profile on these aggregation sites helps you come up in more searches.
Join Relevant Communities
Find forums, groups and subreddits frequented by your target readers. Share your expertise and be helpful. Get involved in a genuine way – not just spammy promotion. Add links to your website/book in your profile but don’t overly self-promote unless it’s a space specifically for that.
Take Advantage of Photo Content
Engaging, high-quality photos and graphics catch eyes on busy feeds. Invest time in creating interesting images to share quotes, excerpts, etc. User-generated content contests are also great for driving awareness. Just make sure to credit contributors!
Attend Local Events
Look up book fairs, literary festivals, book club meetings and other local gatherings for readers and authors. Show up and interact. Bring business cards and freebies like bookmarks. Be friendly and open to connecting. You’ll meet plenty of avid readers and fellow writers.
Some of the most effective ways for authors to promote their work at little or no cost include: leveraging social media, blogging regularly, contributing guest posts, building an email list, running promotions, networking locally, doing media outreach, partnering with other authors, optimizing aggregator profiles, actively engaging in communities, taking advantage of visual content, and getting out to local events. The key is persistence and patience. Know that not every effort will produce instant results. But over time, by consistently showing up and delivering value across multiple channels, you can build meaningful awareness and loyalty. Don’t get discouraged – stick with it!
